Polar night in Tromsø 2026-27

For seven weeks the sun stays below the horizon, and the fjords turn blue and pink around noon. Here is how much light you really get, and how to time a boat trip inside it.

Tromsø lies at 69.6 degrees north, about 350 km above the Arctic Circle. In winter 2026-27 the sun sets for the last time on 26 November and does not rise again until 16 January. Locals call the weeks in between mørketid, the dark time.

Dark is the wrong word for most of the day, though. Around noon the sky goes deep blue, then pink on the southern horizon, and a fjord cruise timed right sails straight through that window. This post gives the dates and times for this winter and matches them against the boats that run.

The quick answer

The polar night in Tromsø runs from 27 November 2026 to 15 January 2027. At the solstice you get about four and a half hours of usable twilight, roughly 09:30 to 13:55, with dimmer blue light for two more hours on each side. The classic catamaran cruise (11:00 to 14:30) sits almost exactly in that window. Wildlife is quieter from November to January, and whales are a separate trip.

When is the polar night in Tromsø in 2026-27?

From 27 November 2026 to 15 January 2027. The last sunrise is on 26 November and the first is on 16 January, measured over a flat horizon.

Visit Tromsø gives "approximately from 27 November to 15 January", and our own calculation for Tromsø centre lands on the same days this winter. Those dates assume a sea horizon. In town, mountains block the low sun, and Visit Tromsø adds that it "is usually not visible from central Tromsø until later in January".

The table is calculated for the city centre in local time (CET). Civil twilight is the light you can read and walk by. Nautical twilight is the deep blue phase after it, when the mountains still show as shapes against the sky. timeanddate.com has the full day-by-day table if your date is not listed.

How much light is there at midday in the polar night?

Enough to see the fjord, the islands and the peaks clearly for four to five hours. At noon on 21 December the sun is only about two degrees below the horizon.

The sky works through a sequence most days. Black until about 07:45, then navy, then a long blue hour, then a band of pink or orange low in the south around noon, then the same in reverse. Snow on the mountains bounces that light back, and on a clear day the whole landscape looks lit from inside.

Cloud changes everything. Under a grey lid the twilight is shorter and flatter, and by 14:30 it feels like evening. The pink band needs a clear southern sky, and Tromsø's coastal weather does not hand that out every day. Plan more than one daytime slot if the colours are the point of your trip.

What does a midday fjord cruise look like in the polar night?

You board in blue light, sail through the brightest hours, and come back as the lights of town come on. On the darkest days the last half hour is deep twilight.

The classic Arctic fjord cruise leaves the pier by Nerstranda at 11:00 and is back around 14:30. Around the solstice civil twilight ends at about 13:54, so the return leg past the Arctic Cathedral runs in nautical blue, with the bridge and the waterfront already lit. We think that is the best part. The cabin is heated and the coffee is free; the open deck is where the photos are.

Earlier starts work differently. Visit Tromsø lists the Hermes II fishing cruise at 09:00 for about 4.5 hours, which means casting off before civil twilight begins and fishing through the brightest part of the day. Do not expect the open-sea brightness of the summer photos on the listings.

Which fjord cruises run during the polar night?

Most of them. The daytime boats keep sailing in December and January, the night cruise runs from 1 November, and only the summer evening cruise stops.

Visit Tromsø shows winter prices for both Hermes II trips across October to December 2026 and January to March 2027 (from NOK 2,190 for the fishing trip and NOK 1,490 for the history cruise in December). Visit Tromsø describes Rødne's catamaran cruise as a winter trip, and the listing warns that the captain may take another route if ice forms in the fjord. A guest review of the sailing yacht is dated 28 December 2025, so that boat goes out in the dark season too.

The electric northern lights cruise runs daily from 1 November to the end of March, according to Brim Explorer. The summer evening cruise does not run in winter. Whales are a different story: the orcas and humpbacks that follow the herring are a full day's trip, not something a fjord cruise looks for. Book whale watching on another day if you want them.

Is a fjord cruise worth it in December, or should you wait for February?

December is worth it for the colour and the mood. February gives you real sunlight on the peaks and more hours to play with.

Be honest about what you want. In December you get blue light, pink skies and a town lit up for Christmas, but no sunshine and short days. Visit Tromsø's operator pages say wildlife sightings are less frequent between November and January, and that weather can change or cancel a trip. Sea eagles still show up. Do not count on them.

The sun returns to the town on about 21 January, when bakeries make solboller and people head for viewpoints for the first rays in two months (Visit Northern Norway). By 1 February there is a sunrise at 09:26. Our month-by-month picture is in the best time for an Arctic fjord cruise.

Frequently asked questions

Is it dark all day in Tromsø during the polar night?

No. There is no sunrise, but on the darkest day civil twilight lasts from about 09:29 to 13:54, with deep blue light for roughly two more hours on each side.

What time should I book a fjord cruise in December?

A late-morning start. The 11:00 catamaran cruise sails through the brightest hours and returns in blue twilight; anything starting after 13:00 will be mostly dark.

When is the first sunrise in Tromsø in 2027?

On 16 January 2027 over a flat horizon. In central Tromsø the mountains hide the sun until about 21 January.

Will I see whales on a fjord cruise in the polar night?

Do not plan on it. Winter whale watching is a separate full-day trip that heads north to where the herring are.
