When to sail

In Tromsø the light decides everything: blue twilight at noon in December, golden sun on snowy peaks in March, sun at midnight in June. Each season gives the same fjords a different face.

There is no bad month for a fjord cruise from Tromsø, but there are very different ones. The water is the same; the light is not. In the polar night you sail through blue twilight; in March the sun climbs over white mountains; in June it never sets.

Here is what each part of the year looks like from the deck, which cruises run when, and where the prices move.

The quick answer

February and March are the best months for most people: the sun is back, snow covers the mountains, and the northern lights still show at night. Rødne's catamaran sails in this window. Late November to mid-January is the polar night, with twilight around midday. From 20 May to 22 July the sun never sets, and the summer evening cruise runs. The cheapest months on direct prices are October to December and April to May.

What is the best month for a fjord cruise from Tromsø?

February or March. Daylight is back, the mountains are still white, and the nights are dark enough for the aurora.

Season dates come from the operators' calendars and guest reviews, and they shift a little each year. Cruises not named in a row may still run: check the date picker before you plan around one cruise.

February and March are prime time for the catamaran: snow on the peaks and the sun back over the fjord.

What is a fjord cruise like in the polar night?

Dim and beautiful. The sun stays below the horizon from about 27 November to 15 January, and you sail through blue and pink twilight around midday.

According to Fjord Tours, there is faint twilight from roughly 9:00 to 14:00. Because of the mountains, the city is in shadow from about 21 November to 21 January. A morning cruise catches the best of the light. Bring a camera that handles low light; the colours are soft and the snow glows.

This is also whale season further out to sea, and Christmas: Brim's prices rise from 11 December to 10 January. More dates in the polar night 2026-27 post.

When is the midnight sun in Tromsø?

From around 20 May to 22 July. The sun stays above the horizon all night, and the summer evening cruise sails in it.

Visit Tromsø gives these dates as approximate. Summer cruises feel nothing like winter ones: green shores, guillemots and eider ducks on the water, and light at 23:00. The summer evening cruise from Polar Adventures goes out to Hella on Kvaløya and on to Tønsvik, with a fishing pot to haul and bottomless hot drinks. Hermes II sails in summer too.

No aurora, of course. Bring a warm layer anyway: the July mean is only about 12 °C, and less on the water.

When can you see the northern lights on a cruise?

From September to early April, on clear nights after dark. A day cruise won't show them; a night cruise might.

The Brim electric night cruise sails from about 1 November to 2 April, 19:00 to 22:00, going by Fjord Tours' season list. The aurora is never guaranteed. What a boat adds, and where it falls short, is in the northern lights cruise guide.

What is the cheapest month for a fjord cruise?

October to December and April to May, if you book direct. Online from-prices in USD stay much the same all year.

Hermes II publishes seasonal prices for its history cruise: NOK 1,490 per adult from October to December and in April and May, NOK 1,690 from January to March, NOK 1,590 in summer. Brim charges its Christmas rate from 11 December to 10 January. On GetYourGuide the from-prices stay steadier: the history cruise is $144, the catamaran $132.

Book the Christmas and New Year weeks early; free cancellation up to 24 hours before makes it painless.

How cold is it on a fjord cruise in winter?

Around -3 °C on an average day in January and February, colder on deck in the wind. The sea is about 4 to 5 °C.

Met Norway's 1991-2020 normals for Tromsø give a daily mean of -3.0 °C in January, -3.3 °C in February and -1.9 °C in March. The coast is milder than inland Lapland, and the harbour does not freeze. On deck, with the boat moving and wind off the snow, it feels a good deal colder than the number.

Thermal suits come with the Hermes II and Polar Adventures cruises. Not on the catamaran, where you sit inside behind glass and step out for photos. What to wear is in the seasickness and clothing guide.

When is whale season in Tromsø?

Roughly late October to January, when orcas and humpbacks follow the herring. Whale watching is a separate full-day trip, not a fjord cruise.

The whales feed in the fjords and open water north of Tromsø, and the trips that reach them take 8 to 9 hours. A 3-hour fjord cruise stays closer to town and doesn't go looking. If whales are on your list, give them their own day.

Is spring or autumn a good time for a fjord cruise?

Yes. April gives long days with snow still on the hills, and September and October bring the first dark nights and the first aurora.

Snow usually lies deepest in April, so spring cruises still look wintry, in bright light and without the deep cold. In autumn the aurora season starts while the evenings are still milder. Both are quieter than the winter peak and, on Hermes II, cheaper.
