Polar Adventures · Killengreens gate 7-11, Tromsø

A light summer night on the fjord

Polar Adventures takes a small boat out on summer evenings to Hella on Kvaløya and Tønsvik, with a fishing line over the side and a small pot to haul up at the stops. Book it for the light: in the midnight sun weeks the sky stays bright late, the water is calm and the eagles are busy.

Summer Evening Fjord Cruise

About this experience

This is the summer trip from the same family company that runs the winter fishing cruise. You meet outside the Polar Adventures office on the front pier (hotel pickup is included), and the small boat heads west to Hella on Kvaløya for about an hour and a half of photos, snacks and coffee, then on to Tønsvik before the run home. The whole thing takes three hours and costs $125, the lowest price on this site.

At some stops the crew sets up simple coastal fishing the traditional way and lets you haul a small pot. It's hands-on but optional; you can just sit on deck. The listing says sea eagles, guillemots and eider ducks are often seen, and one guest spotted a red fox. Snacks, biscuits and bottomless coffee, tea and hot chocolate are included, along with thermal suits, a heated lounge and two toilets.

Check the dates. The title says summer and the reviews run from May to August, but the listing text also mentions autumn skies, so the season may stretch further. From about 20 May to 22 July the midnight sun never sets, which is the best time to do this. No alcohol is allowed on board.

Tips before you book

  • Go between late May and late July for the midnight sun. The evening light is the whole point.
  • Bring sunglasses as well as a warm layer. The sun sits low and bright late in the evening.
  • Eat dinner first. The snacks are good, but they're snacks.
  • Keep your camera out at Hella. That's where the eagles tend to show.
  • Rain isn't a deal-breaker: a guest wrote that the thermal suits kept the trip nice in wet weather.
