Calm water, warm feet

Tromsø's fjords are sheltered water between islands and mountains, and most days they lie flat. The cold on deck is the bigger challenge, and the right layers solve it.

Seasickness is the worry most people bring, and the cold is the problem they actually meet. A fjord cruise from Tromsø stays in sheltered water, away from the open ocean. On most days the ride is smooth.

Here is when it gets bumpy, which boat moves least, how to keep your stomach steady, and what to wear on deck at -3 °C.

The quick answer

A fjord cruise from Tromsø is rarely choppy: the routes stay in sheltered sounds and fjords, and captains change course in bad weather. The Rødne catamaran is the steadiest boat. The open sea, on whale trips and coastal voyages, is rougher. Dress for -3 °C plus wind: thermal base layer, warm jacket, hat, gloves and boots. Thermal suits are included on Hermes II and Polar Adventures cruises.

Is a fjord cruise from Tromsø choppy?

Rarely. The cruises stay inside sheltered sounds and fjords, and the captain changes the route if the wind picks up.

Islands and mountains surround Tromsø, and the day cruises stay among them. The water is often mirror-flat. On a windy day you may feel some chop in the open sound, and the boat may roll a little as it turns. Rødne says its route may vary with weather and sea conditions, and the captain may take another way if ice forms in the fjord.

Which fjord cruise is the calmest?

The Rødne catamaran: two hulls and a large, heated cabin. Bigger boats move less than small ones.

Visit Tromsø says the Rødne catamaran's twin-hull design gives a stable ride. You sit inside at the window for most of the trip, which also helps. The Brim night cruise is a catamaran too. Small boats, the Polar Adventures fishing boat and the sailing yacht, feel the water more, though in a sheltered fjord that usually means a gentle rock.

If you are very prone to seasickness, take the shortest trip: the 2.5-hour Hermes II cruise.

Is the open sea rougher than the fjords?

Yes. Whale trips head out north of Tromsø, and coastal ships cross open stretches such as Stad, Hustadvika and Vestfjorden.

Life in Norway names Stad, Hustadvika and Vestfjorden as the rough parts of the coastal route, worse in winter and in storms. A whale watching day goes much further out than a fjord cruise, and the swell there is real. If you feel sick on ferries, take the fjord cruise and treat whale day with care. More on ships in an Arctic cruise against a fjord day cruise.

How do you avoid seasickness on a boat?

Sit low and in the middle, watch the horizon, keep some fresh air on your face and take medicine before you board, not after.

  • Sit in the middle of the boat, low down. The bow moves most.
  • Watch the horizon or the mountains, not your phone.
  • Step out on deck for cold air if you feel queasy.
  • Eat light before you go, and go easy on the toddy.
  • Take medication early: ask a pharmacist (apotek) in town which one suits you, and take it before you start to feel ill.

How cold is it on deck?

Around -3 °C on an average January or February day, before wind chill. The sea is about 4 to 5 °C.

The 1991-2020 normals for Tromsø give daily means of -3.0 °C in January, -3.3 °C in February and -1.9 °C in March. That is milder than inland Lapland, but you are standing still on a moving boat in the wind. On deck it bites within minutes. In summer the July mean is about 12 °C, still cool on the water.

Every boat has a heated cabin or saloon. Go out for the views, come in to warm up.

What should you wear on a fjord cruise in winter?

Layers: a wool base layer, a fleece or down jacket, a windproof shell, a hat, gloves and warm, grippy boots.

  • A wool base layer on top and legs.
  • A warm mid layer: fleece or down.
  • A windproof outer jacket and trousers if you have them.
  • A hat that covers your ears, a buff, thin gloves under mittens.
  • Boots with grip: piers and decks can be icy.

Thermal suits are included on both Hermes II trips, on the Polar Adventures fishing and evening cruises. The yacht provides blankets. The listings for the catamaran and the night cruise mention no suits, so dress for the deck yourself.

Thermal suits, blankets and a fish cake: the Hermes II fishing cruise keeps you warm for 4.5 hours on deck.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The captain changes the route, or the trip is cancelled or moved. You don't pay for a cruise that doesn't sail.

Hermes II says trips can be cancelled or rescheduled in bad weather. Rødne may change the route for weather or ice. If the operator cancels, you are offered a new date or your money back. If you cancel yourself, every cruise on this site is free to cancel up to 24 hours before, so watch the forecast the day before.

Are fjord cruises suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes. The boats have heated cabins and toilets, and the trips are short. Wheelchair access varies by boat.

Children aged 4 to 15 pay half on the Rødne catamaran booked direct, and the boat has changing tables. Visit Tromsø adds that boarding with a pram can be awkward because of Tromsø's big tides. The Brim night cruise is listed as wheelchair accessible; Polar Adventures takes folding wheelchairs only; on Rødne's boat, wheelchair users need to walk on and off with help. The yacht is not suitable for wheelchairs.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Norwegian fjords cruise choppy?

Inside the fjords, rarely. On the coastal ships the rough parts are the open stretches, such as Stad, Hustadvika and Vestfjorden, more often in winter.

What is the worst month for rough seas?

Winter storms are more frequent from November to March. A Tromsø fjord cruise usually stays calm even then, because it never leaves sheltered water.

Can I go outside during the cruise?

Yes, every boat here has open deck space. Hold the rail when the boat is moving and wear shoes with grip.

Are there toilets on board?

Yes. Hermes II has two, the Brim boat and the Rødne catamaran have toilets, and the Polar Adventures evening boat has two.
