Brim Explorer · Skarven pier, Tromsø

Whales are a different trip

Brim Explorer's whale trip is a full day at sea, not a fjord cruise: a hybrid-electric boat sails north for hours to where orcas and humpbacks feed in winter, then switches to the quiet electric motor near the whales. Book it as its own day, early in the season window, and keep a spare day in case the weather turns.

Whale Watching by Hybrid-Electric Boat

About this experience

The fjord cruises on this site last two and a half to five hours and stay near town. Whale watching is a different thing. The whales follow the herring into the fjords far north of Tromsø in winter, and Brim Explorer's own whale page sends its boats to the feeding grounds near Skjervøy. That's hours of sailing each way, so the trip takes 8 to 9 hours. Visit Tromsø's page for the trip lists morning departures from the pier beside Skarven Kro at Kaigata 6 and a return around 17:00 to 17:30.

Brim names humpbacks, orcas and sometimes sperm whales. Its last season ran from 9 October 2025 to 31 January 2026, and it calls November to early January the best period. Near the whales the boat uses its electric motor to cut noise and vibration, and the crew keeps its distance. Sightings are not guaranteed. Brim says that if the weather stops the whale trip, it may switch to a fjord cruise, and that tours pause if no whales are seen for two days running.

Plan for a long, cold day. The boat has heated lounges with big windows and outdoor decks, but food isn't included: the café sells it, and Visit Tromsø says you can't bring your own food or drink on board. Daylight is short in the polar night, so a good part of the trip runs in twilight. The listing page didn't load when we checked, so confirm the cancellation terms at checkout, because Brim's direct bookings use a stricter 48-hour rule.
